Four researchers from the Department of Communication Sciences and
Disorders were awarded National Institutes of Health R01 awards in
2008. This number of prestigious awards to a department this size
can be considered noteworthy, especially given the current economic
climate for governmental funding agencies. Dr. Dimitar Deliyski, Dr.
Eric Healy, and Dr. Julius Fridriksson were awarded grants from the
National Institute of Deafness and other Communication Disorders.
Dr. Chris Rorden was awarded an R01 from the National Institute of
Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Delyiski is developing new methodologies to help diagnose voice
disorders and to advance the basic science of voice. Healy’s efforts
are aimed at better understanding how humans process speech and how
hearing problems influence that process. Fridriksson is studying the
factors that influence recovery in stroke victims. Rorden is looking
into stroke damage to the right side of the brain and how it
influences the potential for recovery.
