US Government Releases First Physical Activity
Guidelines for Americans
The US Department of Health and Human Services announced the
inaugural release of the
Physical Activity Guidelines for
Americans. Russell Pate, CPARG PI, was part of the
thirteen-member Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee
which developed the Guidelines.
Directly Observed Physical Activity Levels in Preschool Children
CPARG investigators recently published an article in the
Journal of School Health based on the
results of a study which
indicates that young children are sedentary during 80% of their time
in preschool and are moderately to vigorously active only 3% of the
time. This study confirms and extends previous work by this group,
which indicates that children spend a majority of their time in
preschool engaged in sedentary activities.
Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act (FIT Kids)
Russell Pate was one of seven witnesses invited to testify before the House Education
and Labor Committee in Washington DC during its deliberations on the Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act (FIT Kids).
The measure would encourage schools to work towards a national goal of 150 minutes of PE per week for elementary school students and 225 minutes per week for students in middle and high schools.
Pate Receives 2008 Science Honor Award
Russell R. Pate is the recipient of the 2008 Science Honor Award presented by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. The award honors Dr. Pate's significant contributions and commitment to the health and wellness of the nation.

NHLBI of the National Institutes of Health.
Physical Activity Guidelines
The Department of Health & Human
Services has selected Russ Pate of the Arnold School to serve on an advisory committee
that will make recommendations pertaining to the development of the
first federal guidelines to focus on physical activity.

Adolescents

children by helping professionals
in schools, health departments, recreation centers, state agencies,
and not-for-profit organizations design, implement, and evaluate
interventions to promote and increase physical activity among
